CHAPTER 16

Jasper’s barking woke me up. My initial fear disappeared as his bouncing around alerted me to friends, not foes. Sure enough, the security system showed Jillian and Wade with boxes and bags. At the door, I laughed.

“Who else is coming? This is a lot of food.”

Jillian rolled her eyes. Wade huffed. “I’m hungry and this way, you’ll have leftovers.”

I smiled as my stomach growled. I was hungry and it smelled divine. We set the table and unpacked the lasagna, salad, breadsticks, and tiramisu.

“How was your day, Stacie? Foster’s was quiet.”

“Are you implying I create noise or something?”

Jillian chuckled. “Not exactly. Still, when you’re not there, we all do our own thing for lunch. Me? I worked through lunch. Not fun.”

“I bet you’re not as behind as I am.” I pinched my lips. “All I did was clear out some emails and nap.”

Wade grunted. “Boys in blue get any answers on your mysterious caller? Get your phone back yet?”

“Not yet. I imagine it will take a while. My being harassed is probably not the top priority with all of Colton’s metadata and such to deal with.”

He laughed. “Sure hope you don’t have anything embarrassing in text messages. No one ever thinks to delete conversations or photos shared.” He shook his head.

I winked at Jillian. “Oh, no. You mean all the sexting Kevin and I did?”

Wade’s mouth dropped and I burst out laughing. “Gotcha!”

“Okay. You had me for a second there. Especially with Kevin.” He pushed away his plate and served each of us a piece of the tiramisu. “Speaking of Kevin, what’s up with O’Hare?”

I narrowed my eyes and tilted my head. “Not sure I see the connection between the two, Wade.” I glanced at Jillian and she gave me a slight head shake.

“You no sooner break it off with Kevin and I see you kissing O’Hare.” Jillian’s head came up quickly, her brows shot up, and her mouth twitched.

“When did you see me kiss O’Hare?” My recollection was they left the party before me.

“Jillian forgot her scarf and we circled back. You were on the porch or have you forgotten already?”

“Wait. You told me to forget my scarf and to get it from Trina. Why didn’t you tell me?” Jillian placed her hands on her hips.

“Didn’t think it was any of your business or mine.”

With Wade’s response, we both glared at him. He was making it his business now. Jillian stuck her tongue out at him and turned to me.

“Forget about him. I want to hear about the kiss.” Her eyes twinkling, she rubbed her hands together for effect.

I chuckled. “Later, Jillian. I want to know what your husband’s problem was at Creekview the other night. What got you all riled up, Wade?”

He didn’t even have the sense to look remorseful. “That was some close dancing with O’Hare and then he took you into the shadows. You swore off romance remember?”

Jillian’s mouth dropped.

“That’s pretty much what O’Hare told me when I asked him. Thanks for being protective and my friend.
